Mitt Takes Michigan!

This really does change things. It really does. Not that the outcome of this process is clear yet. But Mitt Romney will now be the Republican candidate with 2 first-place finishes and 2 second-place finishes. He will be top in the total votes to date and the total delegates to date. He will have the "latest victory" to be discussed in the media. He will have exceeded expectations as the polls indicated a photo-finish outcome for Michigan, but Romney will have earned a solid and clear win. And, with 2 states coming up for voting Saturday, if he can win at least one of the two and be competitive in both, he'll have plenty of momentum going into Florida. And from there, Feb. 5th (Tsunami Tuesday) is straight ahead.

Also of note: Romney actually beat Huckabee by 5 percentage points among evangelicals in Michigan! That's significant.

More to come, but now it's on to Nevada and South Carolina, baby!

Here are the current delegate counts, per CNN, along with popular vote totals:
Romney has 52 (443,943 votes or 37%)
Huckabee has 22 (207,308 votes or 17%)
McCain has 15 (361,546 votes or 30%)
Thompson with 6, Paul with 2, Giuliani and Hunter with 1 each (all under 10%).

I think this victory for the Romney campaign is a clear indication of the strength of the "grass roots" effort of the Romney camp and its supporters. To me, it is one of the only explanations of how an expected "photo finish" becomes a decisive victory. What this means to me, as a Romney supporter myself, is that an equal or greater effort must now be put into Nevada and South Carolina.

A question I had for anyone who cares to respond...why the huge number of 'undecided" votes on the democratic side of things? If I remember correctly, wasn't it something like 38% of the overall vote? What would this seem to indicate about things for the democratic party--at least in Michigan?

As for the democrat side of things...I am seeing some trends that I like and can only hope to see continue. Seeing the democrats use their traditional attacks on republicans, but applying it to themselves (i.e. Clinton/Obama and the "race" card) is a pleasure, to say the least.

Also, John Edwards, despite clearly being run out of the chance, of even the most remote kind, of victory for that party continues on in the race. This clearly seems to divide up the democratic votes, which benefits the Republican party, in my opinion. Shhhh...nobody tell JohnBoy he is getting his hiney handed to him.

Anyway, nice job Mitt!!

The undecide for the democrats was planned. Since several of the democrats pulled out of the race to punish Michigan for moving up their primaries, it left Hillary as the only real candidate on the ballot. So all of Obama's people voted undecided in the primary. It is actually a pretty big slam for Hillary, and shows a lot of people really like Obama. The biggest key was Huckabee. Very low on the list, which is good 'cause the guy gives me the creeps!

If Edwards wins, I'll move to Canada to practice medicine!!

I find it interesting that after Romney's win, the media's analysis of the Republican party is that they are in disarray because there is no front runner. Yet the Democratic party, also with no clear front runner, is described as having a "wealth of riches." Okay, maybe less interesting, and more frustrating.

I believe the reason for the large number of "undecided" votes in the Democratic primary is because Edwards and Obama removed themselves from the ballot because the Party pulled Michigan's delegates.

How do you see Huckabee's comments on ammending the Constitution to meet "God's standards" affecting his further chances in the race?

Tiff, I think Huckabee's comment on amending the Constitution was like others he has made - he's trying to speak to Evangelicals and say what they want to hear, but then he acts shocked that non-Evangelicals would be bothered by some of these statements. I think it further cements that he is running as a minister and will not be acceptable to other groups/citizens.
